Background
Gary Patton was born December 26, 1943, in San Francisco, California. He received a B.A. in 1966 from Stanford University
and a J. D. from Stanford Law School in 1969. He has been involved throughout his public service career in the issues of land
use planning and decision-making, growth management, conservation of natural resources, protection of the environment, and
governmental effectiveness. He has written and spoken extensively on these topics, and served on many governmental and nonprofit
groups including the Santa Cruz County Local Agency Formation Commission, the Local Government Commission, the Central Coast
Regional Coastal Commission, the Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments, the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control
District Board, Californians Against Waste, Communities for a Better Environment, California League of Conservation Voters,
and others. He has been honored with numerous leadership and outstanding service awards from many organizations and agencies
for his contributions to environmental and planning issues.
