Four Fay brothers, Jeremiah, David, John, and Logan, came to California from New York in 1849. They were joined in 1852 by
Patrick Fay. In 1853, David and Logan started a soap factory in San Francisco; they sold it to John in 1856. In 1856, Logan
returned to New York and entered into a partnership with Patrick. In 1858, David and Patrick invested in a steamer, the "Pelican",
which they later sold to Ben Halliday. John remained in business in San Francisco.
