Finding aid for the Galerie Paul Maenz Köln records, 1956-1991 (bulk 1970-1990)

Series I. General correspondence, 1970-1990

Physical Description: 7 lin. ft. 14 boxes

Scope and Content Note

Series I contains letters concerning the gallery's daily operations, accumulated and generated by Maenz and also by his partner Gerd de Vries and assistants Elke Ctortnik and Claudia Bäz. Correspondence concerns exhibition loans and consignment arrangements (see Series III for loan forms and more correspondence after 1982), acquisitions by museums and private collectors, photograph permission requests prior to 1986 (see Series IV for after 1986). artists who showed with Maenz write about exhibitions, their work and sales (see Series II for those artists represented by Maenz or who exhibited at the gallery from 1970-1980). Some artists (well-known) advise Maenz about his new gallery (1970-1971). Young artists seek=representation. A folder contains farewell letters sent to Maenz upon the closing of the gallery. Many letters are annotated by Maenz with notes or instructions. This series is filed alphabetically, and then chronologically (except 1980-1981 and 1982, which are in loose chronological order). Institutions are mostly filed by city of origin (i.e. Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, is filed under "A").

Scope and Content Note

Series IV consists of letters and forms from magazines, museums, galleries, publishers and private individuals requesting transparencies and photographs. Requests are usually for publications, such as articles, reviews, exhibition catalogs and monographs, but also for sales and galleries interested in showing an artists work (i.e. samples). Also contains letters of compliance and return reminders from Maenz and some photocopies of transparencies sent. Series IV is arranged alphabetically by institution or individual and chronologically within each alpha letter. See Series I for pre-1987 and Series IX for annotated folders of each transparency.

Scope and Content Note

Series IX consists of ca. 9,350 color transparencies, black/white and cibachrome color prints, negatives, contact sheets and slides. The color prints, numbering ca. 1,350, were printed by the repository directly from the color transparencies. All prints are filed in alpha order by artist with their original file folders, which are annotated as to who borrowed, for what purpose and when. Three albums house a complete set of black/white negatives and contact sheets of exhibitions and installations at the gallery and elsewhere.
