Biographical Note
Eloise Emerson was born on December 14, 1910 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. She moved to Long Beach, California sometime after that,
graduating from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in 1928. Emerson then entered nursing school, and trained at Seaside Memorial
Hospital in Long Beach, where she was working when a devastating earthquake hit the city in 1933.
After getting married to Howard Emerson in 1939, she worked as a school nurse in Orange County while raising four children.
In 1970, Emerson moved to Riverside and took a position as a public health nurse with the Riverside County Department of Health.
During her career there, she did a great amount of work with gerontology patients, and served on several boards and advisory
committees for local programs and senior centers.
In 1979, Emerson was forced to retire by the county, which she successfully fought and was reinstated to her position. Her
experience led her to lobby against the California state mandatory retirement age, which was abolished in 1983. She was then
assigned to the Rubidoux Health Center, where she focused on abuse cases, drug issues, and teen pregnancies. She passed away
in 1992 at the age of 81.
