The collection includes correspondence, professional commentary, and various writings both published and unpublished.
Allan Shields joined the faculty of San Diego State College in 1949 as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Psychology, becoming Professor of Philosophy in 1959. In 1954, he left to pursue other academic positions and spent five summers as Ranger-Naturalist in Yosemite National Park. He returned to San Diego State University in 1970 as Professor of Philosophy and retired from that position in 1978.
