Biography
Frances Ring was an editor of
Westways, the magazine of the Automobile Club of Southern California. Lawrence Clark Powell was associated with UCLA for much of his
career, holding the position of University Librarian from 1944-1961. He later moved to Arizona, wrote prolifically about the
Southwest, and was a frequent contributor to
Westways.
Scope and Content
The collection consists mostly of letters sent from Lawrence Clark Powell to Frances Ring, many in regard to his essays for
Westways magazine. Copies of some of her responses are included, along with a few copies of her letters to others in the publishing
business. A typescript of an essay or column entitled "Letter from the Southwest" with ink sketches is found in series 2.
Also included in the collection are several portrait photographs of Powell, newspaper clippings about his life and work, and
some limited edition publications of his writing, specifically:
Goethe's Dream of Sicily (1982);
Le Monde Passe La Figure De Ce Monde Passe (1983);
An Orange Grove Boyhood (1988); and
Fay (1993).
