Series Scope and Content Summary

This series consists of writings from Latham's educational and professional career. The bulk of the series consists of his research on homosexuality within heterosexual marriages, and on gay recovering alcoholics. The series includes Latham's thesis for his Masters degree in Psychology from California State University, Fullerton, and a paper that was published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. The series also includes papers that were presented at the American Psychological Association Convention, and at the National Council of Alcoholism Convention.

Subseries 1.1: Inventory of Marriages with Outside Sexual Contacts (1977) circa 1977

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries consists of documents related to a 1977 study on marriages with outside sexual contacts that Latham conducted for a Sociology 484 class at California State University, Fullerton. The subjects of the study were couples in heterosexual marriages in which at least one of the partners engaged in homosexual activity outside of the marriage. Both partners completed a series of questionnaires about the marriage, including the Locke and Locke-Wallace Marital Adjustment Tests. Latham's hypothesis was that it is not necessarily the strength of a person's homosexual identity, but rather his or her change in self-concept from the time of marriage that determined his or her marital adjustment. The series includes the surveys from the study, and survey administration and data analysis information. The paper that Latham wrote on the study has not been located, but the data analysis information includes notes that describe the project.

Arrangement

Surveys included in the study arranged in numerical order based on the numbers assigned by Latham. These are followed by the eight surveys Latham rejected for the study, with the alphanumeric codes assigned by Latham. The rejected surveys are labeled with an "F" if only the female partner responded, "M" if only the male partner responded, "D" if the couple was divorced, and "W" if the respondent was widowed. Items containing information of a personally sensitive nature have been moved to a restricted file. Materials relating to the study follow the surveys.

Subseries 1.2: Study of Coupled Relationships 1977-1978

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This subseries consists of documents relating to a 1978 study on coupled relationships conducted by Latham, John Ramsey, Jr., and Carol U. Lindquist. The subjects included gay, lesbian, and heterosexual couples, and both partners filled out surveys about their relationships at the same time. The surveys included an 11-page structured interview, a Marital Adjustment Test (MAT), a Goals Questionnaire (GQ), and an abridgement of the Stuart Marital Pre-Counseling Inventory. The study found that the type of relationship (gay couple, lesbian couple, or heterosexual couple) did not, in itself, determine a couple's adjustment in a relationship. The paper that was written on the study was presented at the American Psychological Association Convention on August 29, 1978. The series includes the surveys, the paper written about the study, and presentation notes from the convention. The series also includes survey administration and data analysis information, scoring templates, and correspondence related to the study.

This subseries consists of documents relating to a study on homosexual expression within heterosexual marriages by Latham and Geoffrey D. White. Interviews were conducted with five couples in intact marriages in which the spouse was aware of the partner's homosexual orientation and where the couple regarded their marriage as functioning satisfactorily. The paper Latham and White co-authored on the study was published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy in 1978. This series includes the transcripts of the interviews with the five couples, data analysis information, and the paper written on the study.

This subseries consists of documents relating to a 1979 Survey on Attitudes toward Homosexuality that Latham conducted for his Psychology 521 class, Seminar in Personality. The surveys were administered to introductory psychology students. They include a Semantic Differential Scale (SDS) that was used to assess attitudes towards a "homosexual man," a "lesbian," a "heterosexual man," a "heterosexual woman," a "neurotic individual," and a "psychologically well-adjusted person." The series includes the surveys, survey administration and data analysis materials, and the paper written by Latham on his findings.

Subseries Scope and Content Summary

This sub series consists of documents relating to a 1980 study on recovering gay alcoholics. This research was supported in part by a grant awarded to Latham by the Gay Academic Union, and the National Council on Alcoholism Minority Programs Committee assisted in the data collection. The study sought to assess whether an alcoholic's sexual orientation would affect their experience in an alcoholic treatment program. Gay and non-gay recovering alcoholics were surveyed, as well as staff members at alcoholic treatment agencies. The series includes the paper written on the findings of the study, a preliminary report of the Orange County Gay Alcoholic Needs Assessment Project. Latham wrote the paper along with Karen A. Jones and Marcie D. Jenner, and it was presented at the National Council of Alcoholism Convention on May 3, 1980. The series also includes survey administration materials, coding sheets for the surveys, and the 1979-1980 agendas and minutes of the National Council on Alcoholism Minority Program Committee meetings.

This subseries consists of documents relating to Latham's 1984 study on marriages with outside sexual contacts. This series includes Latham's thesis for his Master of Arts in Psychology from California State University, Fullerton, which was approved on April 25, 1986. The series also includes the surveys that were the basis of Latham's thesis, as well as his survey administration and data analysis materials. The research subjects consisted of homosexual men in intact heterosexual marriages. The surveys include the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS) and a 17-page questionnaire constructed by Latham. Latham's principal hypothesis was that variations in self- reported marital adjustment scores could be explained by the most important reason cited by subjects for a heterosexual relationship, but this was not confirmed by his sample.

The series includes a synopsis of an extensive report on services for gay alcoholics in Los Angeles, and reports Latham compiled for California State University, Fullerton and for the Federal Correctional Institution of Terminal Island, California. The series also includes brief articles written for the Gay Academic Union Newsletter, and some drafts of ideas for gay logos and political cartoons.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series consists of materials Latham collected throughout the course of his research. The series contains a lot of information on homosexuality in general, and on homosexuals in heterosexual marriages in particular, one of the major focuses of Latham's research. The series also contains extensive information on treatment programs and services for alcoholics, another major focus of Latham's research. The bulk of the series consists of published scholarly articles, and unpublished student papers not written by Latham. Some of the other materials include newspaper and magazine clippings, newsletters, pamphlets, project proposals, and reports. The series includes extensive bibliographic information, and surveys that Latham referred to in writing the surveys for his own research studies. The series also includes some of Latham's hand written research notes as well as his class notes from California State University, Fullerton.
