Historical Note
J. M. Heinold's First and Last Chance Bar was opened in 1883 as J. M. Heinold's Saloon. The building itself was built in 1880 from the timbers of an old whaling ship over the water in a dock area that was at the foot of Webster Street. The building was used as a bunk house by men working the nearby oyster beds before being converted into a saloon.
The saloon is also noted as being a hang-out of Jack London, who mentioned the saloon in many of his literary works. The saloon was recognized as a National Literary Landmark in 1998, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

The collection was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by M. A. Ransom. The item was accessioned into the National
Park Service when the museum became a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then were transferred to
San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
