Description
Elizabeth Alice Preston Hanlin was born in Roseville in 1912 to Chester H. and Mabel Beal Preston. Chester was born in March 1881 in Pennsylvania, where he lived until he moved to California to work as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Elizabeth Preston Hanlin Collection is arranged in four series: 1. Ephemera, 2. Publications, 3. Albums/Scrapbooks, and 4. Photographic Material. Items span the years 1913 to 1929.
Background
Elizabeth Alice Preston Hanlin was born in Roseville on November 22, 1912 to Chester H. and Mabel Beal Preston. Chester was born in March 1881 in Pennsylvania, where he lived until he moved to California to work as a brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He lived on Third Ave. in Roseville when he met Mabel Beal. Mabel was born on March 17, 1883 in California and worked as a milliner's apprentice in Santa Cruz. The couple married in 1911 and moved to 322 Duranta St. Chester soon worked his way up to conductor for the railroad. Less than three years after the birth of Elizabeth, her sister Harriet was born on January 19, 1915.
