    Biographical/Historical Note

    Poppe (1897-1991) was a prominent Russian linguist and a member of the Akademiia Nauk SSSR (Soviet Academy of Sciences) in the 1930s and early 1940s.

    Scope and Content of Collection

    In the recording he discusses the Soviet Academy of Sciences' (Akademiia Nauk SSSR) importance, its size and membership, salaries and living costs, daily life, commute, medical care, and living space for his family. He also talks about foreign literature and writing. The recording, in which Poppe speaks in English, is more than five hours in duration. Sergei Yacobson is believed to have played some role in the creation of this recording.
