Biographical / Historical
The Department of English was established in 1905 as part of the Los Angeles State Normal School (LASNS). Beginning with 13
faculty members, the department taught courses on grammar, composition, and literature, and had a special staff for reading,
which would later become the Departments of Theater Arts and of Speech. The English major was developed after the LASNS became
the Southern Branch of the University of California, with the graduate program starting in 1935.
In 1945, the founding of the quarterly journal
The Trollopian by Bradford Booth helped bring further scholarly recognition to the department. The journal was renamed
Nineteenth-Century Fiction in 1949 and
Nineteenth-Century Literature in 1986, due to expanded emphasis and scope in nineteenth-century studies. The Ewing Lectures were started in 1956 to bring
British and American academics to UCLA. A special program for teachers of English as a second language was started in 1957,
operating in the Philippines, Colombia, and Japan.
The Composition Section was a subdivision of the English department, offering a wide range of first-year, intermediary, and
advanced courses. The Composition Section eventually became the separate entity of the UCLA Writing Programs.
