Biographical/Historical note

The origins of this collection began as the Black Santa Barbara Historical Calendar, a collaborative research project in the Black Studies Department at UCSB. The aim of the calendar was to call attention to local personages and events important in Santa Barbara's African American community. Professor Cedric Robinson headed the project with the help of undergraduate students from across the nation and high school students from the local district. Research for the first calendar began in the summer of 1994; the Black Studies Department published two calendars, one in 1995 and the other in 1996 and research continued in the summer of 1997 until funding was lost and the project was halted. While the collection's origins were to support a discontinued calendar project, the documents, photographs and interviews are of great value for an understanding of African American local history. Additional materials continue to be be added.
