Biography

Charles Warren, Democrat, was a State Assembly Member, 1963-1977. His district, within Los Angeles County included the areas of Hollywood and Wilshire. He was elected to the 56th Assembly District, which became the 46th Assembly District after redistricting.
Assembly Member Warren was born on April 26, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Horace Mann Grade School and Paseo High School. From June 1944 to November 1946, he served in the United States Army. Assembly Member Warren established residence in California in 1945, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California, Berkeley, and a degree in Law from Hastings College of Law. Father of three children, he married Audrey Paul on March 16, 1963.
Assembly Member Warren was elected to the State Assembly in 1962. From 1966-68, he served as Chairman of the Democratic Central Committee. Later in his career, he served as Chairman for the Energy Task Force of the National Legislative Conference, and was a member of the Environmental Advisory Committee of the Federal Energy Administration. He has also been a member of the Urban League, National Panel of Arbitrators, American Arbitration Association, Wilshire Bar Association, Wilshire Chamber of Commerce, Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and the California Bar Association. After leaving the State Assembly, Warren went on to serve on former President Jimmy Carter's cabinet as Chairman of the Council on Environmental Quality from 1977 through 1979.

The Charles Warren Papers consist of one series: Assembly Bill Files, 1963-1976. The bill files document his legislative activity during his terms as a member of the California State Legislature. The bills, amendments, and resolutions proposed by Assembly Member Warren center on issues such as, agricultural land use and preservation, civil rights, natural resources, pollution, fair employment and housing practices, women's rights, state colleges, public health, juvenile courts, motor vehicles, energy and public utilities.
