Acquisition and Custodial History
The California State Archives acquired the Paula Boland Papers following her final term in the State Legislature.
Paula Boland, Republican, was a State Assembly Member from 1990-1996. Her 38th District included eastern Ventura County and
northwestern Los Angeles County, including the cities of Fillmore and Simi Valley, and parts of Thousand Oaks and the city
of Los Angeles. The unincorporated communities within her district included Chatsworth, Granada Hills, and Northridge.
Boland was born January 17, 1940 in Oyster Bay, New York and moved to Granada Hills, California as a young child. She attended
San Fernando High School, where she was editor of the school newspaper and yearbook. After high school, as an Army wife, Boland
wrote for many base newspapers and hosted talk shows on Armed Forces Radio. In 1973, she began a career in real estate and
became a successful broker in the San Fernando Valley. She is married and has three grown children, three grandchildren and
one great grandchild.
Assembly Member Boland served as President of the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce and the Granada Hills Hospital Foundation.
She also served on the Local Agency Formation Commission, and was an active member of the local Board of Realtors and the
Los Angeles Police Department's Oral Review Board and Business Watch.
Assembly Member Boland was elected her first try for office in 1990, partly due to her twenty years of Republican connections.
A key interest for Boland has been criminal justice. While vice chair of the Public Safety Committee, she authored laws that
changed the statute of limitations to allow any person, regardless of age, to file a complaint alleging abuse as a child;
give victims of rape the right to be notified if their attacker is determined to carry the AIDS virus; prohibit prison inmates
from changing their names while in prison; and require suspension or expulsion of students caught carrying firearms. She has
supported many bills determined to break up the Los Angeles Unified School District. She supports the death penalty, opposes
tax increases, and most abortions. She supports business tax incentives and further workers' compensation reform.

The Paula Boland Papers consist of Assembly Bills and Correspondence Files, 1991-1996. The bill files document Boland's legislative
activity during her terms as a member of the California State Legislature. Bills introduced by her include a wide array of
subjects. Of particular interest are those bills concerning criminal justice, violent crimes, sexual crimes, drug trafficking,
confidentiality, statute of limitations, reorganization of the Los Angeles Unified School District, inmate name changes, AIDS/HIV,
and parental rights. The Correspondence Files contain constituent, capitol, and district correspondence. The collection also
contains one Senate Bill authored by David Roberti pertaining to day fines, prepared by the Joint Committee for Revision of
the Penal Code (1994).
