Scope and Contents

The papers and audiovisual materials comprising the Vivian Price collection (ca. 1970-2014, bulk 1990-1997) document her career as an advocate for women's rights in the trades' workforce.
The collection is primarily composed of legal documents, business letters, union records, and training and educational materials depicting Dr. Price's affiliations and contributions to various tradeswomen organizations. They also reflect her active participation in the promotion and awareness of gender related issues in the workplace and educational system. Organizational papers primarily document the activities of these trades organizations and unions such as: WINTER, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), and Electric Women. They also document their liaisons with the US Labor Department Bureau and other related organizations. Also included are relevant Women In Non-Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER) records created in the course of its foundation, administration, and management during the 1995-1997 period. Additionally, a wealth of records depicts the activities and history of the IBEW and support groups such as Electric Women and the Southern California Tradeswomen Network (SCTN).
Research papers and audiovisual materials document the role women played in building California's I-105 Century Freeway (1982 - mid.1990s), unions, homosexuality in the military, and other topics. The Century Freeway papers include administrative and legal records within the Century Freeway files noting lawsuits and legislation directly affecting women's labor conditions as well as equal opportunity employment for women within the freeway construction process.
Research and academic records also illustrate Dr. Price's track record towards affirmative action, the roles played by women in the construction industry nationally, and the promotion of diversity within these non-traditional roles. Many of these issues have been translated into films such as In My Own Words ; Against All Odds , the story of the first African-American journey-woman in the Los Angeles electrician's union, and Gender in the Global Construction Site, which was developed for the 1994 Beijing Women's Conference (United Nations, 1995). Records from the Fourth World Conference on Women center on Vivian's involvement with the conference as an attendee, speaker, and documentarian.
The reference subject file gathers publications, pamphlets, articles, and newspapers clippings covering several themes including: affirmative action, women apprenticeship programs, sexual harassment, safety and health in the workplace, civil and workers' rights, gender films, political science, LGBT issues, women's studies, feminism, unions and labor relations. The collection also includes a selection of rare Lesbian/Feminist newsletters from Long Beach, California.
Formats include organizational records, legal records, flyers, promotional materials, scholarly articles, academic papers, newsletters and other publications, newspaper clippings, books, correspondence, receipts and financial documents, photographs, film negatives, VHS tapes, U-Matic cassettes, audio cassette tapes, and Mini Digital Cassette tapes.

Biography

Vivian Price has been the Assistant Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at California State University Dominguez Hills since 2005. She received her doctorate in Political Science at the University of California, Irvine, in 2000. Chapters of her dissertation on affirmative action and community pressure in construction have been published in Feminist Economics (2002) and in a collection of essays, Women in Construction (Reed Publications, 2004). Her interest is in the humanistic study of gender and work, and has focused on the history and contemporary lives of women in non-traditional jobs, especially in the Building Trades. In 1996, she received a start-up grant and then, additionally, a production grant from the California Council of the Humanities (CCH) to produce Hammering It Out, a documentary on the Century Freeway Women's Employment Program which has since been screened internationally. In 2008, she received another grant from the CCH to direct a series of life-story interviews with tradeswomen; training youths from the Long Beach Lesbian and Gay Center to conduct the interviews and then edit these interviews into short films.
Since the 1990's, Dr. Price has been actively working to facilitate a greater representation of skilled women in the trades. This effort has been facilitated through education networking, training, and her active membership in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the Southern California Tradeswomen Network (SCTN). In 1992 Dr. Price was elected office at the IBEW local 11, and and under the IBEW's jurisdiction, collaborated with Electric Women where she served as secretary throughout the 1990s. She also documented the history and activities of the IBEW for their century anniversary (Our History, Our Future: History of the IBEW 1891-1991), and her role in the inception of WINTER can be traced back to 1994. Along with being a founding member, Dr. Price held a position on the Board of Directors and developed its official newsletter (Non-Trad. News). Moreover, Dr. Price continues to actively pursue grants for training and educational initiatives, provides advisory work, and has collaborated with outreach projects at LAUSD and Long Beach City College, among other institutions. These activities are designed to promote an awareness of gender related discriminatory issues in both the workplace and the educational system. Some of these include proper education and training in sexual harassment prevention and racial discrimination as well as how to monitor relevant laws and propositions. In 2007, Dr. Price initiated the Tradeswomen archives project at the CSUDH Archives and Special Collections Department.

Series I:Tradeswomen Organizations & Related Groups 1969-2010; bulk 1990-1997

Scope and Contents

This series consists of items collected by Vivian Price covering her affiliation with and participation in tradeswomen organizations located primarily in California but also includes other states such as Illinois and New York. This series includes administrative files, minutes from meetings, personal and organizational notes, work standards, recruitment manuals, correspondence, and publications. It also includes assorted ephemera documenting the creation, functions, and activities of many tradeswomen organizations, women's support groups and union organizations. The first sequence, arranged according to the collector's given order, focuses on entities with whom Dr. Price was directly involved. Examples of these organizations are: WINTER, Electric Women, and Southern California Tradeswomen Network. The second grouping includes organizations Dr. Price has either supported or found personally interesting. It also lists directories of organizations and women apprentice referral lists compiled for networking purposes, and appear at the end of the series. These documents and records reflect the efforts, struggles, and accomplishments women have made in organizing themselves in their pursuit of traditionally male oriented occupations. For example, since 1985, Electric Women has functioned as a retention and recruitment group within the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, whose membership is concentrated but not limited to the Local 11 union. Likewise, in 1995 WINTER grew out of the Century Women's Employment Project which Price was directly involved in developing the organization's founding principles. Since then, WINTER has functioned as an advocacy and support group for women working in or seeking to work in non traditional professions, as well as promoting employment, training, and pursuing the retention of women for high-waged, high-skilled jobs.Series I.a Women In NON-Traditional Employment Roles (WINTER), 1991-2008; Series I.b International Brotherhood of Electric Workers (IBEW), 1970-2008; Series I.c Electric Women, 1984-2001; Series I.d Southern California Tradeswomen Network (SCTN), 1993-1998; Series I.e Other Trades Women Organizations and Related Groups, 1978-2014

Series II: Century Freeway 1971-2001; bulk 1998

Scope and Contents

This series consists mostly of administrative files, minutes from meetings, organizational papers, court decisions, and editorials featuring the historical background and multifaceted construction process of the California I-105 Freeway. Although the Century Freeway project was envisioned in the mid 1950's, materials mostly cover the litigation process which started in 1972, court decisions and settlements (1981), and various construction projects that began in May 1982.The Interstate 105 is 17.3 miles of freeway and light-rail transit ways between Norwalk and the eastern edge of Los Angeles' International Airport (LAX). This freeway was to be built in compliance with a 1981 federal court consent decree signed by the California Department of Transportation requiring the maximum participation by workers consisting of minorities, women, and residents of the low-income communities that lie along the freeway's route. This series features documentation of the role and activities played by the Century Freeway Affirmative Action Committee, as a monitoring and compliance agency in ensuring the compliance of this decree, along with records of the relevant programs and projects used to recruit minorities, but more specifically women. Status reports and various correspondences thoroughly document subcontractors' compliance with the stated employment goals (in regard to the aforementioned groups throughout the1988-1993 period). Also included in this series are the files pertaining to the Century Housing Corporation, a successor to the Century Freeway Housing Program, which absorbed the Women's Employment Program in June 1996. Additionally, editorials, press releases, and newspapers clippings from the Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily Journal , the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and the Dodge Construction News—Green Sheet feature the historical background and evolution of the construction process. As for the series arrangement, news and press releases are chronologically organized and appear at the beginning of the series while the remaining records are listed under the agency of origin or under the unit which inherited the functions of a predecessor agency. Complimentary documentation related to the Century Freeway, the CCAAC and other monitoring agencies can be found under the Academic file (see also box 19, folder3; box 20, folder 1-11).

Series III: Career Development in the Trades 1990-2013; bulk 1993-1997

Scope and Contents

Career development in the trades is an umbrella term that encompasses professional meetings, apprenticeship programs, and educational projects to prepare women with the skills necessary to succeed in the construction, manufacturing and transportation sectors of the economy. This series gathers conference and workshop programs, training materials and handouts, minutes from seminars, transcripts of discussions, reports and formal studies, personal notes, as well as curricula development and community projects related to the integration of women into nontraditional jobs throughout 1990-2008, but mostly covers the span of 1993-1997. This series describes tradeswomen's education and continuing training as well as the many defining factors of the workplace. Topics focus on training and advancement in the trades, changes to the construction industries, leadership, mentoring and networking and working conditions (federal polices, standards and work regulations, health and safety hazards, sexual harassment, and racial and genre discrimination issues). The series is divided into three subseries: Series III.a Conference and Workshops,1993-2008; Series III.b Educational Programs and Community Projects, 1980-1997; Series III.c Reference Materials, 1978-1998

Sub-Series A: Conferences and Workshops 1993-2008; bulk 1993-1997

Scope and Contents

This subseries gathers materials from conferences, seminars, and workshops Dr. Price attended or participated in by giving presentations mostly under the jurisdiction of unions and tradeswomen groups at the local and national levels, but also including the 1995 United Nation's Women's Conference in Beijing. Materials include: activities programs, abstracts of presentations, workshop handouts, published reports and unpublished materials regarding work polices, legislation, and standards, as well as personal notes and artifacts such as the Tradeswomen bandana crafted for the IBEW's First Women's Conference in Washington DC in 1997. These materials document women's labor force participation at the local and national levels, recruitment and retention and defining factors and conditions of the job site; including the application of new green technologies as presented in the 2009 Women Building California Conference. Among the legislation and polices discussed are: the 1992 Women in Apprenticeship Occupations and Nontraditional Occupations Act, the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, the 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act, Equal Employment Opportunities laws, and Affirmative Action legislation and propositions such as the California 209. Also included are the materials pertaining to the 1995 Women's Conference in Beijing where Dr. Price presented a lecture titled Gender in the Global Construction Site which explores the labor workforce of women construction workers from India, Pakistan, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand. This presentation laid the foundation for her documentary Transnational Tradeswomen released in 2006. Further information can be found under the Academic file, box 19, folders 7-11 and the Video Productions file, box 25, folders 7-11.

Series VII: Moving Images 1990s-2000

Scope and Contents

This series primarily consists of Dr. Price's raw footage and some of her completed documentaries depicting women of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds performing and succeeding in male-dominated trades in the United States and Asia (1992-2000). Films also feature the historical background and activities of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (1991-1998). Titles of her completed documentaries include: Against All Odds, In My Own Words,1992 (a joint production with Lynn Shaw and Neshtey Crudup) featuring the first African American woman, Neshety Crudup, to enter the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Faces of Tradeswomen , 1995 (a 15-minute piece commissioned by the Dept. of Labor Women's Bureau) portraying the experiences of five female construction workers from diverse ethnical backgrounds and trades, and Hammering It Out: Women in the Construction Zone, 2000, the story of many tradeswomen involved in the construction of the Century Freeway in Los Angeles throughout the 1990s. Other videocassettes consist of news broadcasts portraying tradeswomen as well as safety and technical instruction. The moving images are composed of recordings which are arranged by a scheme devised by Dr. Price: completed documentaries along with the most relevant raw footage appear first according to their release date followed by raw footage materials categorized under different subjects. The final subseries is comprised of unknown raw footage taken by Vivian, and documentaries and television shows by other filmmakers. Video recordings are available in VHS, U-Matic, HI-8, and Mini DV formats. The series is divided into six suberies: Series VII.a Documentaries, 1990-2000; Series VII.b Transnational Trades women; Series VII.c Century Freeway I-105; Series VII.d Tradeswomen; Series VII.e International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IEBW), ; Series VII.f Other Videos
