Series 2: Oral History Interviews, 1941-1993

Physical Description: 3 Boxes, 13 Folders

Scope and Content Note

This series contains files relating to the oral history component of the World War II Project. Included in this series are: administrative files such as notes, oral history release forms, and names of potential interviewees. Also included are excerpts from various interview transcripts grouped according to subject. The most substantial portion of this series is composed of files containing correspondence, transcript portions, and other information on most of the individuals interviewed by Berube as part of the Project. Interviewees are listed by their real names followed by pseudonyms in parentheses (if pseudonyms were used in the book or initially requested by the interviewees). The oral history interview tapes are listed separately in Series 8, "Audio-Visual." Interview audio-tapes conducted for the documentary film project also are listed in Series 8; interview transcripts for the documentary film project are located in Series 7. A number of interviewees placed restrictions on the use of their interviews; see file 3/5, "Releases/Signed," prior to examining transcripts or listening to tapes.

Series 8: Audio-Visual, 1932-1993

Physical Description: 4 Boxes

Scope and Content Note

This series includes all sound recordings related to the World War II Project, including the book as well as the documentary film phases of research. Along with the audio-taped oral history interviews are audio tapes of Berube's slide presentations as well as recordings of discussion sessions in which Berube and other scholars discussed the history of homosexuality; these tapes are "listen-only," the GLBTHS does not own reproduction rights. Also included in this series are a number of discs of recorded correspondence from 1941 and 1942. The discs have been transferred to audio-tape (but have not been transcribed); the audio tapes also are found in this series. This series also contains two boxes of photographs and slides. The majority of the photographs are World War II-era snapshots of oral history interviewees; the slides are the images Berube used in his presentation, "Marching to a Different Drummer."
