    Biography

    Christian William Theodore Benedix was born on August 10, 1839, in Plau, Mecklenburg-Scherwin, Germany, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1852. Soon after arriving, they settled in Scott County, Iowa. Christian was a private in the Company G, 1st Regiment, Iowa Infantry and fought for the Union in the Civil War. He was honorably discharged in August 1861 after serving out his commitment of four months. Christian moved to Idaho in 1864, where he worked as a miner for two years. He then moved to California in 1866 and in the spring of 1868 bought 160 acres of farmland in Franklin, California, outside Sacramento. Christian married Emily Weismann in 1870, and they raised five sons: Fred, Albert, Christian, Frank and Henry.

    Scope and Content Note

    The letters in this collection are written by Christian Benedix in German (accompanied by an English translation) and addressed to family members in Germany (1893-1906). They concern work on the farm in Franklin, Christian's sons and their pursuits, and the health of family members.
