History

Biography

In 1911, William Muir was a partner with Mr. Symon, of Muir & Symon, Blacksmiths, Machinists & Iron Ship Repairs, 1015-1017 Battery St., San Francisco. Later, Muir and his brother, Adam, organized as the Muir Brothers Iron Works.

Custodial History

Accession No. SAFR-1 was transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park from Golden Gate National Recreation Area which acquired the collection from the San Francisco Maritime Museum when it became a unit of the National Park Service. The museum received the materials from the estate of William Muir on February 4, 1952.

Scope and Content

This collection consists of 3 photographic prints, 2 postcards, and 1 page from a scrapbook primarily related to west coast maritime vessels.
The three prints are: woman christening unidentified ship; CALIFORNIA (steamship), the first American steamship to round the Horn, print from a photo taken in 1872; and a print of a bucket and wood piling. The two postcards are of a Japanese sailing schooner in the Bering Sea and the Collingwood Monument at Tynemouth, England. The scrapbook page has small drawings of EDWARD SEWALL (ship, 3-masted) and DIRGO (ship, 3-masted) copyrighted 1912-1914.
