Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains photographs by Alexander Liberman from 1925 to 1998, including
approximately 8,000 photographic prints, 50,000 transparencies, 90,000 negatives, 38 books
of contact sheets, and loose prints mounted on foam core. The subjects of the photographs
fall primarily into two groups: contemporary artists and cultural figures, and European
historical sites. The collection documents over 242 major European and American artists,
such as Braque, Cezanne, Dali, de Kooning, Duchamp, Ernst, Giacometti, Kandinsky, Matisse,
Newman, Picasso, Rauschenberg, and Rothko. Among the images are portraits of the artists at
work or in their studios, photographs of their work in progress, and documentation of
finished artworks. A smaller group of photographs documenting historical and architectural
sites focuses on Greece, France, Italy, and Spain. Some photographs depict Liberman's family
and friends. Production materials for some of his photographic books are included, as are
images for Barbara Rose's book on Liberman. Also present are photographs by other
photographers, some dating as early as 1911.

Physical Description:
61 Linear

(84 boxes)
Scope and Content Note
The contact books contain strips and sheets of contact prints from Liberman's
negatives, together with some enlargements of individual frames. Some of the whole
contact sheets and strips have also been enlarged. The contact prints are
cross-referenced to the negatives in the numbered boxes listed above, by box number, and
negative strip number. Most negatives and virtually all contact prints are dated.
Contact books numbers 1 to 9, in Boxes 335 to 343 below, are bound scrapbooks, with the
contact strips and sheets pasted to their pages. All "volume" numbers and "title"
headings given to the entries for the contact books in Boxes 335 to 373 are taken from
labels on the original scrapbooks and binders. Note that Box 123* above contains contact
sheets from strips of 35mm negatives, enlarged to cover 16x20 sheets of photographic
printing paper.
Arrangement
According to Liberman's original arrangement.
Negatives,
1949-1967, undated
Scope and Content Note
Binders of negatives, most 35mm., also 4x5, 6x6 cm., 110 format, etc.
Liberman originally stored the bulk of his negative strips in consecutively-numbered
metal lockboxes, in which the strips were placed in individual glassine sleeves, on
the fronts of which he noted such details as Box number, strip number, frame numbers,
and, sometimes, subjects. The metal lockboxes of negatives found in the collection at
the time of processing correspond to Boxes 304A to 308A, and 309A to 324C, below.
Negatives for the bulk of the photographs used as illustrations in Liberman's books
The artist in his studio and
Then had at some point been removed from these boxes and placed elsewhere.
These negatives are now housed in Boxes 328A, 328B, and 328C; see the headnote to the
entries for these boxes below. The negative strips have been removed from their
glassine sleeves, and placed in Printfile negative preserver pages, housed in
slipcased binders. Each negative strip has its original glassine sleeve, with
Liberman's notes, placed immediately beneath it in the page. Many glassine sleeves
contained several strips of negatives, which have been grouped together in the
Printfile pages, with the glassine sleeve at the end of the sequence. Photocopies of
exterior labels on the original boxes are placed at the beginning of each
corresponding binder, or binders, of Printfile sheets. The contact strips and sheets
in Liberman's contact books-now housed in Boxes 93 to 131 below-are cross-referenced
to the corresponding negatives by box number, and negative strip number.
