Subjects include his books PATTERNS OF CHILDREARING and IDENTIFICATION IN CHILD REARING; the Kansas City thumb sucking study; research on gifted children; research for a psychological study of Mark Twain; and his affiliations with the American Psychological Association, the Social Science Research Council, the Society for Research in Child Development, and the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences.

    Biographical/Historical Sketch

    Professor of psychology at Stanford, 1953-1974, and Dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, 1961-1970, Sears earned his a.b. at Stanford in 1929 and his Ph.D. at Yale in 1932. Before joining the Stanford faculty, he taught at the University of Iowa, where he directed the Child Welfare Research Station, and at Harvard, where he was also director of the Laboratory of Human Development.
