Biographical/Historical Sketch
Sanford taught physics at Stanford University from its inception in 1891 until his retirement in 1919. He earned his B.S.
at Carthage College in 1879; after several years of teaching in Illinois, he went to Germany to study with physicist Von Helmholtz.
He was professor at Lake Forest University prior to his arrival at Stanford.
