Administrative Information
The postcard collection consists primarily of views of west coast United States of America seaports and views of marine vessels.
There are 29 postcards, 1 small map, and 1 photographic print. The bulk of the postcards are color lithographs, and are dated
from ca. 1906 to ca. 1928. There is one color postcard, of the ferry EUREKA, dated ca. 1950.
20 of the postcards are of port cities. These include: Astoria, OR (1); Catalina, CA (2); Nagoya, Japan (1); Portland, OR
(3); San Pedro, CA (3); San Francisco, CA (7); Sausalito, CA (1); Tacoma, WA (2). One of the San Francisco cards was sent
to Oakland, and has writing on the back in either Chinese or Japanese.
The remaining nine cards are of vessels, none of which is repeated. The vessels are: a generic life boat, a generic sloop,
ASAMA MARU (built 1929; passenger vessel), EMPRESS, MINNESORA (battleship), RHODE ISLAND (battleship), SURGING HOME FROM CALIFORNIA
(clipper ship), TABORA (passenger vessel), VASHON ONE (passenger vessel), and a packet of 16 photographs of U.S. Pacific Fleet
ships, published by Edward H. Mitchell. A small map shows the route of the INDIANAPOLIS and CHIPPEWA between Seattle and
Tacoma. The photographic print is labeled on the back: "Steamer IMPERATOR entering New York on her maiden trip."
Arranged alphabetically by port city, then alphabetically by vessel name, if known.
