Vete Zablackas was born in Akron, Ohio, and was working as an editor in New York in 1937 when he traveled to Spain and voluntarily
enlisted with Spanish Republican Forces in an International Brigade. He fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civil
War, primarily in the Pyrenees Mountains along the French border, from 1937 to 1938 when he was given a medical discharge
and returned to the United States.
