Biographical Note

Paul De Longpré was born in 1855 in Lyons, France and died in 1911. He was a self taught painter who emigrated to the United States, first to New York in 1880 and then to California in 1899. The home he built in Hollywood, California became to be celebrated for its magnificent flower gardens. Among his most famous paintings are "Double Peach Blossoms" and "White Fringed Poppies (1902). In a journal entry written by Charles Lummis, "Paul de Longpre, the only painter of flowers that ever amounted to much in my estimation, and the real social founder of Hollywood" (See MS.1 Lummis Collection, MS.1.2.735, page 14).

Custodial History

The collection was artificially created from various collections within the Braun Research Library, including the newspaper clippings collection and the Charles Fletcher Lummis library.

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of published material and personal papers. The published materials include magazine and newspaper articles about De Longre's 50th birthday celebration, which includes a poem dedicated to the artist by Theo M. Carpenter; biographical note on De Longre; the theft of De Longre's "bric-a-brac" during an exhibit held at his Hollywood home; and an article about De Longpre's flower paintings. Personal papers in this collection include correspondence to Moses King and Charles F. Lummis. Also included is a color postcard of De Longpre's residence in Hollywood, California. The postcard was printed by A.C. Bossleman and Company.
