Biography
The collection includes a sample of the authorized public documentation of the government of San Francisco in its formative
years as a United States municipality. The city was founded as a Spanish colony in 1776 by José Joaquin Moraga and Father
Francisco Palóu, named for Saint Francis of Assisi, and incorporated under the United States government on April 15th, 1850
by act of the Legislature.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of a series of official reports on urban engineering, transportation,
architecture, commerce, and finance dating from 1889 to 1931. Also included in the collection are city charters and amendments
issued from the years 1897 to 1929. All the publications in the collection were printed under the authority of the City of
San Francisco.
