    The collection documents Cooper's early life horse breeding and racing, ranching, commerce, land development, and politics. Because of the breadth of the collection, it has been organized alphabetically by subject, person, or correspondent with inclusive dates listed. Users should be aware that many files refer to other files and that careful cross-referencing may be required. The collection includes correspondence, memoranda, financial records, breeding lists, photographs, and publicity.

    Historical Note

    Rancho San Luis Rey was one of the most prominent horse-breeding ranches in the Southwestern United States during the 1930s and 1940s. Owned and operated by Charles E. Cooper, the ranch bred, sold, and ran horses throughout California and Tijuana. Cooper was an integral part of the early development of North San Diego County (Bonsal), the Del Mar Race Track, horse racing in California, and Wilshire Boulevard.
