Biographical/Historical Sketch

Blume, known as the father of earthquake engineering, earned his B.S. in civil engineering in 1933 and his engineer's degree in 1935 at Stanford University. He was a construction engineer on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and later worked for Standard Oil. In 1945 he established his own structural and earthquake engineering firm. He returned to Stanford in 1964 for graduate work and earned his doctorate in civil engineering in 1967. He died in 2002.
