Background
In 1876, Leland Stanford acquired 650 acres of the former Rancho San Francisquito with the
intention of establishing a rural residence. Subsequently, he initiated the establishment of
the Palo Alto Stock Farm, dedicated to breeding trotting horses. Following the passing of
their sole child in 1885, Jane and Leland Stanford, a one and a half years later, formalized
their commitment to education by transferring the farm to the establishment of Leland
Stanford Junior University.
