Abstract: A letter from Flora Stuart Boyd, daughter of Theodore Chauncey Boyd, to the Society of California Pioneers. She remarks about the two paintings her father dontated to the society and his acomplishment of improving the San Francisco city seal, for which he received 100 dollars.

Scope and Contents note

Flora Stuart Boyd writes on December 12, 1933 from the Balfour Hotel at 326 O’Farrell St. in San Francisco to an unknown addressee at a society about her father, Theodore Chauncy Boyd. The letter explains that Boyd arrived in California in 1854, having previously worked in New York City, where he was well known. The letter mentions a Mr. Avery of the Bulletin. The writer explains that her mother presented the society with two of Theodore Chauncy Boyd’s paintings, Saturday Night on Kearny St. and Sunday Afternoon at Poodirard’s Gardens, the subject of which is a Mr. Poodirard. In addition, she states that three letters of thanks he received were destroyed in the 1906 fire.

Biographical note

Theodore Chauncy Boyd was born in New York in 1830. He worked as a designer, wood engraver, watercolorist, and stockbroker. He arrived in San Francisco in 1854 and set up a studio at Clay and Montgomery streets. He designed and engraved the Seal of San Francisco and had exhibitions at the Mechanic’s Institute Fair in 1871 and the SFAA in 1873. He died in 1902. (Hughes.
