Abstract: The Sierra Madre Historical Archives collects, preserves, and provides access to a variety of materials that tell the Sierra Madre story: photographs, slides, postcards, scrapbooks, city directories, maps, letters, periodicals, posters, works of art, sound recordings, moving images, and ephemera. The collection's subject area strengths include San Gabriel Mountain resorts accessible via local trails and Sierra Madre art and artists.

Provenance

The collection is added to on an ongoing basis as materials are donated by community members, local organizations, former residents, and those connected to Sierra Madre’s history.

Biography / Administrative History

The Sierra Madre Historical Society began collecting local history materials in 1931. In 1981, the Jameson Sierra Madre Room was added to the Sierra Madre Public Library in order to house the rare books, California books, and archival collections assembled by the Sierra Madre Historical Society. In 1991, the Preservation Society of Sierra Madre joined with the Historical Society to form the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society. In 1999, the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society entered into a formal agreement with the Sierra Madre Public Library to share ownership of the Sierra Madre Historical Archives.

Chronology

The oldest materials in the collection are from 1848. Materials are donated to the collection on an ongoing basis.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection is composed of a wide variety of formats including: architectural drawings, artist files, artworks, audio recordings, books, cultural artifacts, diaries, journals, personal papers, digital files, directories, ephemera, moving images, institutional records, manuscripts, maps, memorabilia, microfiche and microfilm, newspaper clippings, newspapers, official records, oral histories, photographs, postcards, printed works, prints and posters, rare books, serials, slides, and statistical data. The collection covers the Sierra Madre and San Gabriel Mountains regions. Subject areas include artistic communities, businesses, clubs and social organizations, church and religious organizations, community service organizations, education, health care and retirement, horticulture and gardening, library history, natural disasters, people, politics and government, transportation, wistaria vine, and veterans.

Materials have been organized into broad subject categories. Materials within a given category have been arranged in alphabetical order. Items within folders are generally arranged in chronological order.
