The Aerosol Factor. San Jose, Cal.: KTEH,
1976 March 3
Scope and Content Summary
Fifty percent of the earth's fluorocarbons are in aerosol cans. The ozone layer is a thin layer of gas that is in the stratosphere.
Without the ozone, life on earth would not be possible. At the University of California Irvine, two scientists named F.S.
Rowland and Mario Molina developed the ozone depletion theory accidentally. They wanted to know what was happening to the
chlorofluorocarbons being released, which was degrading the stratosphere with the chlorine molecules. The video gives detailed
explanations of how scientists have studied the effects of these fluorocarbons in the stratosphere.

Recording does not start at the beginning of the program.
Scope and Content Summary
This video is about the ozone layer and the degradation of the ozone layer through the release of chlorofluorocarbons. The
use of aerosols has been banned but the main cause of the release of fluorocarbons has not been regulated which is Freon in
refrigerators. Non-melanoma is the most common cause of skin cancer caused by overexposure of ultra-violet rays. Fluorocarbons
were first used in 1930s as coolants for refrigerators. They replaced other chemicals that were hazardous and flammable. There
was a government ban on fluorocarbons starting from April 1979 due to the dangers of these fluorocarbons.

Tape 2,
1978
Scope and Content Summary
This video is about the regulating of fluorocarbons and other alternatives to these fluorocarbons. The biggest use of fluorocarbons
is in the refrigeration and automobile companies which amount to 30% of emissions. There has been a new system developed by
a company called Rovac. There are no restrictions on fluorocarbon air-conditioning the only way an alternative would catch
on is to sell it to the automobile industry.

Abridged version,
1979
Scope and Content Summary
Fluorocarbons cause skin cancer amongst individuals. Sunlight causes life but only a certain amount of visible light reaches
the Earth. Ten years ago the fluorocarbons reached the atmosphere. Ultraviolet light strong enough to break the bonds of chlorofluorocarbons
and chlorine atoms attack the ozone layer. One molecule of chlorine is strong enough to destroy a thousand molecules of ozone.
This is a serious environmental concern. Professor Rowland explains the dangers of chlorofluorocarbons. The loss of ozone
is dangerous because it is a shield against ultraviolent radiation. UV rays would cause sunburns and eventually skin cancer.
There would be an increase in skin cancer due to radiation. More government regulations are needed to regulate and supervise
the release of fluorocarbons in the atmosphere.

Tyler Prize 1983: Rowland and The Ozone Layer.
Make Peace With Nature. WKRC-TV (Cincinnati),
1983 June 13
Scope and Content Summary
The host David Surber and guest Professor Rowland discuss that the depletion of ozone increases the risks of skin cancer.
They discuss that ultraviolet B rays are the main cause of skin cancer. The ozone layer keeps the heat in the stratosphere
and is an inversion layer and the depletion of the ozone layer will cause skin cancer. There are two episodes of this show
starting from around minute 28. There is also a mention of air pollution caused by smog. This smog was the main cause of urban
pollution. The late John Tyler and his wife Alice created a foundation which awarded any tax free rewards to those recognized
to improve quality of life.

Slides for lectures
1997-2004 and undated
Scope and Content Summary
Included are slides Rowland used in his lectures and presentations. Also included are "Slide records for lectures": photocopies
of sheets of slides that Rowland used in lectures he delivered on particular dates.
Arrangement
Slides that are labeled and filed using a system based on the Greek alphabet are first, including a subject index in the first
folder. Next are slides numbered and filed in numbered order, followed by those that are either unnumbered or not in order.
Folders that have a large percentage of slides picturing people, including Sherwood and Joan Rowland, are in the last two
folders in this section. Slide sheets were kept in the same order as they were found in Rowland's binders.
Processing Note
Slides are described as "undated" since it is not known when they were created. However, many have dates marked on them. These
dates generally correspond to the dates relevant to the subject of a slide, such as historical atmospheric data reflected
in a chart or graph.

Conference, travel, and lecture files, Subseries 10.4
Scope and Content Summary
This subseries comprises primarily correspondence, programs, agendas, abstracts, brochures, Rowland's extensive notes, and
other materials related to conferences, meetings, and lectures. Also includes a small amount of planning correspondence for
conferences and other events co-organized by Rowland. This subseries does include some abstracts for conference papers and
lectures, but it does not include complete manuscripts or transcripts of speeches, lectures, or panel discussions. These can
be found in Subseries 10.2.
Arrangement
The arrangement is chronological order by year, but not necessarily in any order within a given year. Materials found in original
folders were usually left in them. Loose materials belonging to this subseries found throughout the collection were filed
according to year.

General subject files and collected literature Series 11.
Bulk, 1981-2007
1956-2007
Physical Description:
17.0 Linear feet
Series Scope and Content Summary
This series is comprised primarily of gray literature, newsletters, and clippings collected by Rowland or sent to him. Subjects
include environmental issues, notably ozone depletion and climate change, as well as public policy, activism, and other topics.
Included are reports, newsletters, and other publications by governmental and non-governmental organizations; newspaper and
magazine clippings; and other materials.
Arrangement
This series is arranged in 3 subseries:
- Subseries 11.1. Subject files
- Subseries 11.2. Reports and other non-periodical publications by organizations
- Subseries 11.3. Newsletters
Appraisal Note
The vast majority of Rowland's collected news clippings and print-outs were retained. Materials not retained were those too
time-consuming to file, such as entire magazine or newspaper pages in which the article of interest was not marked or cut
out, and multiple-page articles where all of the pages were not found. In addition to news and magazine clippings, these non-retained
materials include many loose pages from
Nature,
Science, and
Chemical and Engineering News.
Subject files: clippings, correspondence, and other materials Subseries 11.1
Arrangement
Arrangement is alphabetical by subject, and roughly chronologically thereunder.
Processing Note
The subjects and files in this series were created during processing. An attempt was made to file materials consistently.
However, due to the volume of loose materials filed and the effort to process expeditiously, researchers should be aware that
dates are approximate and overlapping, and articles on similar subjects may be found in different files throughout the series.

Stratospheric Ozone: Earth’s Vital Shield.
Photochemistry S341. Open University and BBC-TV,
1983
Scope and Content Summary
The most common propellants in the 1970s were fluorocarbons. There were two scientists in 1974 who determined that these fluorocarbons
were depleting the ozone. Fluorocarbon 11 is mostly used in aerosols and fluorocarbon 12 is used in coolant in refrigerators.
Through the research of these two scientists, fluorocarbons were phased out in the US. Only by banning the use of fluorocarbons
could the escalating use be diminished which the people of US considered no action would result in a world disaster. In Europe
there was a different approach then in the US of a wait and see. It all changed in an issue of Nature written by Molina and
Rowland, who proposed their theory that fluorocarbons can destroy ozone in the stratosphere.
