Scope and Contents

The Stanford Marching Band Collection consists of studio masters on open reel tape for three albums from 1974, 1977, and 1979, as well as a tape of live performances at football games from 1971 and one 45 rpm 7" EP from 1967. Founded as the Stanford Band in 1893, the Stanford Marching Band (technically known as the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band) radically changed direction in 1963 as a result of a strike, and is now an independent student-run scatter band. This independence meant jettisoning most standard band material in favor of covering contemporary rock and pop songs (here ranging from The Grateful Dead to The Tubes), wacky costumes, and controversial antics both on the field and off.
