Scope and Content of Collection
"In 1949 the Division of Letters and Science, motivated by a profound belief in the values of liberal education, especially
for the superior student who has not yet defined his professional goal, and uneasy over the growing tendency toward specialization
in undergraduate work, inaugurated the Tutorial Program, a program unique to the University of California, Santa Barbara.
The Tutorial Program was designed for students who wish to acquire a broadly liberal education, to explore beyond the limits
of conventional curricula and traditional 'majors.' To the able and curious student it offers a chance to range as widely
as the limitations of time, his own intellectual capacities – and those of the faculty available for his instruction – can
carry him. He is encourage to follow lines of inquiry which have interested him but which he cannot pursue further in the
regular curriculum; he can exercise his ingenuity in discovering new vistas by inventing courses to satisfy his intellectual
curiosity; he has the chance, dependent on his own power, to develop a sturdy independence of thought. In the pursuit of his
education, he is permitted to choose those teachers who have especially fired his imagination, and to work individually under
their direction. The Tutorial Program thus offers him the ideal possibilities of freedom and independence in his college work.
In it he many find the comparatively serene point of contemplation which is threatened nowadays by the burgeoning growth of
the student population."
