    Biographical/Historical Note

    American educator; acting president, Stanford University, 1948; president, State University of New York, 1949-1951; vice president, Fund for the Advancement of Education, 1951-1963; president, Academy for Educational Development, 1963-1987.
    1902 Born in Bay City, Michigan.
    1924 Earned B.A. in Psychology at North Central College.
    1926-1927 Served as an assistant in Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota.
    1926 Earned M.A. in Psychology at University of Maine.
    1927-1929 Served as an instructor in Educational Psychology and an assistant professor of Educational Psychology and assistant director of Educational Research at the University of Minnesota.
    1929-1935 Served as an assistant to the President and associate professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota.
    1929 Earned Ph.D. in Educational Psychology at University of Minnesota.
    1924-1926 Served as an instructor at the University of Maine.
    1938-1948 Served as a professor of Education and Vice President at Stanford University.
    1937-1938 Served as a professor of Education at Northwestern University.
    1935-1936 Served as the assistant dean of the College of Education and as a professor of Education at the University of Minnesota.
    1941-1945 Served in the Navy during World War II.
    1951-1963 Served as Vice President of the Fund for the Advancement of Education.
    1949-1951 Served as President of the State University of New York.
    1948 Served as acting President of Stanford University after the sudden death of Donald Tressider.
    1963-1972 Served as President for the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies.
    1961 Co-founded the Academy for Educational Development.
