Scope and Content

The Placer Co., Calif., War History Committee was created in the Fall of 1918, as part of the effort by the State Council of Defense to collect and preserve historical records relating to California's part in the great conflict. John F. Engle, principal of Placer Union High School, was appointed chair of the committee established to record for posterity the history of Placer County in World War I.
The records include brief narratives from administrators of several committees, such as the Exemption Board and the Commercial Economy Committee, set up within the County to expedite the war effort. There are also several lists of servicemen from Placer County, responses to questionnaires from women's organization and Red Cross committees, and very brief biographical notes and/or photographs of about 135 servicemen, usually sent to the Committee by the men themselves or by their families. Of particular note is an extensive series of letters from various army camps in the western United States sent by serviceman Lee J. Wilcox to his family.
