Series 1.  Pressbooks 1956-1979

Series size: 11 oversize boxes

Scope and Content

This series consists mostly of pressbooks for films released and distributed by American International Pictures and its affiliates. About a quarter of the materials in the series include poster illustrations and correspondence, as noted in the container list. Notable materials include pressbooks for AIP's Edgar Allen Poe horror films, such as The Pit and the Pendulum and The Haunted Palace. Also found are biker films, such as Hell's Angels and Wheels and Hell's Belles; blaxploiation films, such as Blacula, Black Caesar, and Coffy; and beach party films, such as Beach Party and Muscle Beach Party. The series also includes pressbooks for international films released or re-released by AIP, most notably Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita. The numbers preceding the movies, eg, "603. Konga," indicates the numerical order of the original filing system.

Series 2.  Publicity files 1958-1993

Series size: 36 archival document boxes, 2 oversize boxes

Scope and Content

This series contains publicity materials related to Samuel Z. Arkoff's career as a film producer and distributor. The bulk of the materials are clippings, tear sheets, and publications. There are also correspondence, ephemera, photographs and one scrapbook detailing a trip Arkoff took to Mexico in 1965 with actor Frankie Avalon. Notable subjects covered by the materials include information about the many films Arkoff took part in during his career; Arkoff's autobiography, Flying through Hollywood by the Seat of my Pants; Arkoff's plans to remake the 1957 hit I Was a Teenage Werewolf in 1992; the National Association of Theater Owners (NATO); and AIP's 25th Anniversary in 1979. Note that there are lacunae in the series: lacking materials are the folders for "Personal Remances (sic), September, 1959"; "Weekly Variety, Gene Arneel, November 18, 1970"; "7817. Tales of the Crypt"; "7901. The Visitor"; "7902. The Evictors"; "7907. The Humanoid;" "7909. Underground Aces;" "7910. Weekends;" "7915. Dreams Die First;" "7916. Quickie Chickie;'" "7919. Jaguar Lives;" "7718. Winds of Autumn;" "7601. Don't Open the Window;" "7602. To the Devil a Daughter;" "7619. Mr. Chicago;" "7624. The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires;" '7630. The Winds of Autumn;' '7645. Truck Stop Woman.'
This series has been arranged into five chronological subseries, each depicting one decade, starting with the 1950s and ending with the 1990s. The materials within the subseries have been kept in Arkoff's original order. Folders containing items with a range of dates have been organized by starting date. Undated materials have been kept in original order and placed in subseries based on related items.

Series 6.  Lobby cards 1956-1968

Series size: 1 oversize box. 2 oversize folders

Scope and Content

This series consists of lobby cards for nine films released by American International Picture between 1956 and 1958; one film (the immortal "Angels from Hell") released in 1968; one film released in 1964 ("The Masque of Red Death"); and one in 1981 ("Emmanuelle in Soho"). Each complete set of lobby cards contains eight numbered cards. There are complete sets for each film and incomplete sets as well. "The Cat Girl" and "Machine Gun Kelly" each contain two incomplete sets."How to Make a Monster," "Reform School Girl" and "Teenage Caveman" each contain one incomplete set. "Angels from Hell," "Dragstrip Girl" and "Suicide Battalion" only contain one numbered lobby card out of the set of eight. The lobby cards for "The Masque of the Red Death" and "Emmanuelle in Soho" are, respectively, a "Half Sheet" and 30" x 40" lobby card. On these types of lobby cards, see, Ed and Susan Poole, Learn About Movie Posters (iGuide Media, Inc., 2002), 74-75.
Note that there were no title cards produced for any of the lobby card sets. Title cards are often regarded as the most valuable in a lobby card set; however, not all studios created title cards and those that did (Paramount and Disney, for example) omitted them as early as the 1930s.
