libraries, Consult repository, San Joaquin Valley Digitization Project, San Joaquin Valley
Library System, Fresno CA
This collection was created by the staff of the nine public libraries of the San Joaquin
Valley Library System by digitizing photographs in their collections and the collections
of other institutions and individuals in their communities.
Project Information: San Joaquin Valley Digitization Project
The San Joaquin Valley Digitization Project provided the nine public libraries of the San
Joaquin Valley Library System (SJVLS) with equipment and training so that they could
digitize the historical photographs in their collections. Staff at each of the nine
participating libraries scanned the photographs and created the metadata. SJVLS staff
developed the project's database and web site that provides access to the collection on
the internet. Other institutions and individuals in the communities participated in the
project as partners by contributing photographs and historical information.
Online, the collection is called
"San Joaquin Valley & Sierra Foothills
Photo Heritage"
.
The project was funded by a Library Services and Technology Act grant awarded by the
California State Library. The grant funded phase of the project began in October 2001 and
ended June 2003.
Additional information regarding individual institutions that participated in this
project is available on their web sites, and users of these online materials who would
like more information about the collections from which they were selected should contact
individual institutions directly.

Scope and Content of Collection
The San Joaquin Valley Digitization Project image collection consists of photographs
selected from the collections of the nine public libraries of the San Joaquin Valley Library
System, as well as the collections of museums and individuals in their communities. The
photos were selected mainly for their historical interest. They represent various aspects of
life in the San Joaquin Valley and the Sierra Nevada foothills; in the counties of Kern,
Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Madera, and Mariposa. The photos date from 1850 to 2002.

motorized vehicles, people in period dress, local businesses and buildings, and parades;
portraits of local people; domesticated animals; railroad transportation; class photos; and

significant number of photos depicting oil fields in the Coalinga area; public schools in
Fresno County; an earthquake in Kern County; libraries throughout the Valley and foothills;
and Sierra Nevada scenes of logging, dam construction, and Yosemite National Park.
