Background
Seven prominent San Diego doctors formed the County's first medical society in 1870 to assure the integrity of the medical profession in the greater San Diego area. Criteria for membership were: 1.) a good primary and medical education, attested by a diploma from some known medical school of good repute; and 2.) good professional and moral standing in the community. The San Diego Medical Library Association was formed in 1915 as an affiliate of the Medical Society for the purpose of maintaining a library of medical materials for San Diego physicians.
