Abstract: Italian-born painter and sculptor. Circa 200 letters received from galleries, museums, and artists, four manuscripts, and
circa 20 printed items primarily relate to the Surrealist retrospective "Le Surrealisme en 1947" curated by Andrei Breton
and Marcel Duchamp and held at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, July-August 1947.

Biographical/Historical Note
The Italian-born painter and sculptor, Enrico Donati, became an American citizen in 1945. During the 1930s and 1940s he was
associated with Surrealists in Paris and New York, contributing to the Surrealist retrospective in Paris in 1947.

Scope and Content of Collection
A major focus of the letters, manuscripts and ephemera that comprise this collection is the Surrealist retrospective "Le Surrealisme
en 1947" curated by Andrei Breton and Marcel Duchamp and held at the Galerie Maeght in Paris, July-August 1947. The collection
comprises circa 210 published and unpublished letters, postcards, and notes received by Enrico Donati, many relating to the
organization and impact of the Surrealist exhibition. Other letters from galleries, museums, and Donati's fellow artists reflect
his professional life and that of his friends.
Also included are four manuscripts by Donati, clippings relating to his work or the 1947 surrealist exhibition, and articles
about Donati's work by American and European critics such as Dore Ashton, Hubert Crehan, Alain Jouffroy, and Jaroslav Serpan.
