Sound recording of a speech by Cronin on student loans and Boston schools

Scope and Contents note
Speaking at an unidentified rotary club forum, Joseph Cronin addresses the topics of higher education and finance, with a
focus on student loans, as well as reporting on Boston schools. He spends the majority of the time dispelling the myths and
misconceptions about student loans, specifically the assumptions that student loan funds dried up in 1981, middle income families
are no longer eligible for aid, students do not repay the loans they are given, and governments do not proactively pursue
borrowers who do not repay.

Scope and Contents note
In an address at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development 45th annual conference in San Antonio, Texas,
Joseph Cronin discusses business interest in schools. He introduces a typology of corporate involvement to show the variety
of relationships businesses may have with schools, and then goes into detail about the Boston Compact, which is the city's
collaborative school improvement agreement among stakeholders in city government, the Boston school system, and Boston businesses.
A question and answer session follows Cronin's address.
Sound recording of a panel discussion moderated by Cronin on public education: proposals for excellence

Scope and Contents note
Joseph Cronin moderates a panel concerned with the equity and excellence of education, and the employability of students who
graduate from schools in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Panel members discuss ways of raising the quality of education,
and modernizing Massachusetts schools. On Tape 1, the speakers include Gerard D'Amico, James Collins, Jack Lawson, Robert
Spillane, and Michael S. Dukakis. The last speaker, Ken Lozano (?), is cut-off and continues on Tape 2, Side A. On Tape 2,
Ken Lozano finishes his speech, followed by a question and answer session. The last ten minutes of Side A and all of Side
B relate to a planning meeting that is separate from the public education panel.
