Scope and Content of Collection
Research materials of the Traditional Birth Attendants Project directed by Dr. Patricia Townsend. The project surveyed previous
fieldworkers in Papua New Guinea on traditional childbirth practices in rural Papua New Guinea. The project was funded by
UNICEF. Materials include correspondence, questionnaires, reports, and unpublished papers. The collection is arranged in
three series: 1) CORRESPONDENCE, 2) RESEARCH MATERIALS and 3) WRITINGS BY OTHERS.
SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE
The CORRESPONDENCE series contains communications between Dr. Townsend, colleagues and anthropologists concerning research
involving the observation and understanding of the Papua New Guinea traditional childbirth techniques. The bulk of the correspondence
dates from 1982 to 1985.
SERIES 2: RESEARCH MATERIALS
All of the materials represented in the RESEARCH MATERIALS series pertain to the data collected for the report for the project
by anthropologists during their previous field work in rural Papua New Guinea communities. The drafts of the report are included,
as well as the questionnaire and responses which are organized alphabetically by informant.
SERIES 3: WRITINGS BY OTHERS
The WRITINGS BY OTHERS series, arranged alphabetically, contains reports and manuscripts by anthropologists and researchers
related to childbirth, reproduction, and family practice in Papua New Guinea communities.
