Research Materials - Race Relations in Los Angeles (Box 1 of 2) 1945-1957

Scope and Content

Correspondence regarding policies at the UCLA faculty center; "The White Reaction Study" (analysis of reactions to the Watts riots of 1965) by Richard T. Morris and Vincent Jeffries 1967; research documents related to the Central Valley including tax returns and land ownership records. Also includes meeting minutes and correspondence from Shevky's work with the Committee for the Study of Intercultural Tensions including a letter from member Carey McWilliams about the community of Belvedere and studies of "social violence" by member Jakob Zeitlin (1945), and meeting minutes and research materials from Shevky's work with the Mayor's Special Committee on the Housing Emergency, including studies of restrictive covenants and public housing by the American Council of Race Relations and Shevky's analysis of area census tracts, crime rates, school districts, employment and housing.

Scope and Content

Research materials related to the Central Valley Project, conducted on behalf of the California Housing and Planning Association, 1944-1945. Includes correspondence with the Haynes Foundation, Carey McWilliams, Louis Barlett, George P. Moran, and the California Housing and Planning Association, research notes and clippings, articles and notes about legislation of public utilities in California, planning meetings minutes, and clippings and population statistics about the Central Valley and drafts of various memos and reports written for the Project, including "Outline of an Economic Survey of the Los Angeles Industrial Area with Emphasis Upon the Problems of Post-War Readjustment." Also includes a series of maps about land and water use in the Central Valley created by Shevky.

Research Materials - Race Relations in Los Angeles (Box 2 of 2) c. 1940s

Scope and Content

Box contains research materials about minority populations and neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Includes compiled statistics about the spatial distribution of minority populations, compiliations of demographic data about various minority populations (age, gender ratios, ethnicity), and other research materials. Box also contains correspondence, drafts and research materials related to two studies in which Shevky was involved: the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce's Research Committee (1947) and the American Council of Race Relations' "Los Angeles Neighborhood Study." Box also contains several maps, including "An Industrial Survey of the City of Los Angeles and Continguous Territory" from 1909.
