Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a reminiscence and three newspapers.

The 150 page reminiscence is written as a retrospective autobiography. Also included in the volume are poems, speeches of Shaw's own and others. The oldest newspaper is the Boston Recorder (Massachusetts), dated May 15, 1824. The significance of the contents have not been identified. The Quincy Patriot (Massachusetts) dated April 9 1842 contains a sea story by Shaw. The Polk County Democrat of Osceola, Nebraska dated July 1, 1909 contains Shaw's obituary.

Biographical / historical:

Biography: Captain Loring N. Shaw was born on August 25, 1827 in Quincy, Massachusetts. He graduated from a public school but went to sea in the summers from the age of 13. Shaw's father, John W., was also a sea captain. At the age of 21, Shaw became master of a California Coastal and Inland Waters vessel where he stayed for 8 years. In 1863, he left California and went to Boston to work in a general provisions business. In 1877, he went into the hotel business and Wisconsin, and in 1887 he moved to Osceola, Nebraska. There he lived until his death in June 25, 1909.

This material was originally donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum Association. It was first transferred to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and later to the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
