Administrative History

The University Art Gallery operated in what was originally built as a powerhouse from 1931 until the construction of the University Art Museum, completed in 1968. Winfield Scott Wellington (1897-1979) was Professor of Design in the Department of Decorative Art from1936 until 1965. He was director of the University Art Gallery at Berkeley from 1946 to 1962, and he mounted exhibits in San Francisco museums as well.

Scope and Content Note

189 photographic prints, 4x5 in. or smaller, of exhibits in the University Art Gallery created by Winfield Scott Wellington, Professor of Decorative Art. There are also 63 8x10 in. enlargements, mounted on boards (housed as UARC PIC 2800K). All prints are black and white, except for two color prints, noted below.
The majority of the exhibits show artifacts from the Hearst (then Lowie) Museum of Anthropology. Other exhibits include the sculpture of Elah Hale Hays and of Robert B. Howard, pottery of Frans and Marguerite Wildenhain, and Chinese stone and bronze rubbings.
Exhibit titles and dates were taken from the university's weekly Calendar.
