Biography
Little is known about Theodore Walker. According to the manuscript, he appears to have been from Essex, England, possibly
from Feering or Leicester. A deeply patriotic Englishman, he was also interested in religion, education, and colonialism.
Scope and Content
This bound manuscript includes the typescript of a journal kept during a 1908 trip to the West Indies, sixty-nine photographs
(most of which were apparently taken by the author), an essay titled "A Trip to the West Indies", a letter signed by "T. Walker",
and four newspaper articles attributed to Theodore Walker, three of which appear under the title "A Trip to the West Indies".
Among other places, Walker visited Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Grenada, and Panama. The manuscript focuses on important issues
in the West Indies for Edwardian Britain: race, British colonialism, the United Fruit Company and American economic interests,
the Panama Canal, education, and religion. Although Walker's name does not appear in the journal itself, it seems very likely
that he was its author; the events mentioned and attitudes expressed in the journal closely match those in Walker's newspaper
articles. The photographs show a variety of scenes with both British and West Indian individuals; many of the photographs
are in poor condition.
