Scope and Content of Collection

Typescript draft of excerpts from the Charles E. Huse Diary, 1850-1852 (San Francisco) and 1853-1857 (Santa Barbara), edited by William Henry Ellison and translated (from the Spanish) by Francis Price. The original two volume manuscript diary is housed in the Santa Barbara Historical Society Library.
This 1954 draft is entitled Yanqui and Santa Barbarian: Selections from the Charles [E.] Huse Diary, 1850-1857, and is described as William Wyles Library Publication No. 1, under the general editorship of Jay Monaghan. In this draft Monaghan explains how this volume evolved, and he also provides a biographical sketch of Huse. The 1954 draft is unfinished and apparently never was published.
The collection also includes a copy of the earlier 1953 typescript of the entire Huse Diary, probably intended to be used for excerpting/editing purposes. Another bound copy of the 1953 version also is available and has been cataloged separately (Wyles F864.H8 A3).
Huse was a Harvard graduate who came to California shortly after the Gold Rush, first to San Francisco, then Santa Barbara. Much of the diary describes the transition of Santa Barbara from the Spanish to the American way of life.
There currently is no detailed container list for this collection.
