Alexander Lowry has been making personal and professional photographs since 1957. During
his career he has been a newspaper photographer and public relations photographer, and for
the last 30 years has concentrated on contract work, primarily for educational and
conservation organizations. Photo Researchers, Inc. in New York has represented his stock
photography since 1964. He has taught workshops for University of California, Santa Cruz
Extension and others since 1974. His photographs have appeared in more than 500 publications
worldwide over a span of five decades. He has exhibited widely in both solo and group shows,
and his prints are in public and private collections.
Scope and Content of Collection
This collection consists of twenty four 8x10" black and white photographs taken of the
damage to downtown Santa Cruz, California, after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
At the time of the earthquake, Alexander Lowry and his wife owned and operated a studio in
downtown Santa Cruz. He took these photographs immediately after the earthquake and during
the next few days when most of the downtown was off limits to the general public.
Also included are scenes of the University of California, Santa Cruz campus.
