Historical or Biographical Note

Agency History: The Louis Weule Company, which dealt in nautical charts, instruments and supplies, was founded in 1862 by Charles Pace of London, and taken over by Louis Weule in 1892. After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, the firm was reorganized under the name of the Louis Weule Company.

Collection Scope and Content

The Louis Weule Company records (SAFR 13569, HDC 1) contains records about nautical charts, instruments and supplies, was founded in 1862 by Charles Pace of London, and taken over by Louis Weule in 1892.
Collection consists of correspondences, ledgers books, cargo lists, Azimuth instrument. There are also invoices and bills from jewelers, watch and clock makers, shipping lines, precious metals dealers, drawing materials, brass and iron works, chars and nautical works, marine hardware, tools, supplies, opticians, etc. Dates end at 1920 except the Greenwich Regulator Time Book which covers years to 1949.
A recent addition to this collection consists of a paper copy and an electronic, scanned copy of Louis Weule's personal journal. The journal dates from January 1, 1904 through December 31, 1908. There is a description of the events on April 18, 1906, the date of the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. Most of the journal is in German, written in the old style German script.
