Processing History

The collection was cataloged by Isabella Zuralski, with revisions made by Karen Meyer-Roux in October 2013.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of printed proofs, drawings, and manuscript material made in preparation for Cassas's magnificent publication Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phoénicie, de la Palaestine, et la Basse Aegypte (variant title: Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine, et de la Basse Egytpe), published in three volumes in Paris between 1799-1800. The prints reproduce drawings Cassas made when travelling (1784-1787) in Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Cyprus, and Asia Minor to record ancient monuments, other sites of interest, scenes from daily life, and local costume. Present in the collection are three bound volumes, including two volumes of prints and one volume of documents; sixty-four unbound prints and drawings; a printed prospectus, and several unbound manuscripts.

Arrangement

Arranged in 4 series: Series I. Bound prints, undated; Series II. Bound manuscripts, 1798, undated; Series III. Unbound manuscripts, 1797, undated; Series IV. Unbound prints and drawings, 1795-1823, undated.

Biographical / Historical Note

The French painter and architect Louis-François Cassas (1756-1827) was a member of the retinue of the French ambassador to the Ottoman court, Count Marie Gabriel August de Choiseul-Gouffier. Commissioned by the ambassador, he travelled from 1784 to 1787 to Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Cyprus, and Asia Minor and drew ancient sites, many of which had never before been recorded. An earlier commission in 1782 was for a series of views of the Istrian and Dalmatian coast. These drawings were reproduced in engraving in his book Voyage pittoresque et historique de l'Istrie et de la Damatie (Paris, 1802). Cassas returned to Paris in 1792. After the Revolution he became drawing professor at the Gobelins Tapestry Manufactory, where he remained until his death.
