    Abstract: The Federation of Hillside and Canyon Associations was founded by residents of the Santa Monica Mountains during the winter storms of 1952 to protect, promote and further the interests and welfare of residents and property owners, to preserve and enhance property values, to encourage architectural and horticultural improvement and development, and to maintain building and zoning restrictions. The collection consists of alphabetical subject files of former Federation president, Betty Dearing. Subjects include air pollution, billboards and signs, and Federation business records.

    Biography/History

    The Federation of Hillside and Canyon Associations was founded by residents of the Santa Monica Mountains during the winter storms of 1952 to protect, promote and further the interests and welfare of residents and property owners, to preserve and enhance property values, to encourage architectural and horticultural improvement and development, and to maintain building and zoning restrictions; by the mid-1980s the nonprofit umbrella organization had grown to more than 40 local homeowner organizations, representing a constituency of some 200,000 households concerned with such mutual problems as fire, flood, landslides, traffic congestion, noise, waste disposal and zoning abuses.

    Collection consists of alphabetical subject files of former Federation president, Betty Dearing, as assembled by Nancy Pohl and organized by Harriett S. Weaver. Subjects include air pollution, billboards and signs, and Federation business records.

    The Federation of Hillside and Canyon Associations was founded in the tempest-tossed winter of 1952 “to protect, promote and further the interests and welfare of residents and property owners” in the Santa Monica Mountains. By the mid-1980s this nonprofit umbrella organization had grown to more than forty local homeowner organizations, representing a constituency of some 200,000 households concerned with such mutual problems as fire, flood, landslides, traffic congestion, noise, waste disposal and zoning abuses.
    Collection no.1244, encompassing the files left by former Federation president Betty Dearing, covers the period, 1963-79. The material was assembled by her Briarcliff friend and neighbor, Nancy Pohl, and organized by the Federation's Fire Committee Chairman, Harriett S. Weaver. ( Cf. her collection, no.1447.)
